One of the biggest issues with treating skin conditions topically is the thick and protective outer layer of the skin. This layer is called the stratum corneum. This layer provides the immune function and barrier protection of the skin for the rest of the human body. Most topical cosmetic applications never get past this layer and typically only hydrate or dehydrate this layer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Many chemicals have been developed to cross this layer in the pharmaceutical industry. There are a variety of drugs that use transdermal delivery. For example, one of the contributors to the opioid epidemic is the fentanyl patch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This patch provides an all-day dosing of a highly addictive narcotic via a transdermal formulation. The patch works by harnessing a chemical that allows the fentanyl to cross the stratum corneum and pass into the blood stream to exert its effects.<\/span><\/p>

What are Terpenes?<\/h2>

Terpenes are compounds found in many essential oils of a variety of plants. These are compounds made of oxygen atoms, hydrogen and carbon only.<\/p>

For thousands of years and even now, terpenes have been used in medicines, fragrances and flavorings. 1,8 cineole is a terpene substance found in essential oils that is a very strong penetration enhancer for medications and other substances.<\/p>

Additionally, most essential oils also have flavonoids and terpenes that act in an antimicrobial manner. Another potent terpene for purposes of crossing the stratum corneum is D-limonene.<\/p>
