Technically, it is called N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine.\u00a0 Obviously, it needed a nickname.\u00a0 It is of a family of chemicals called acetamides and it is known as a biogenic indoleamine.\u00a0 It was discovered in the 1950s.\u00a0 <strong>It\u2019s produced in the pineal gland, and released into your bloodstream to trigger drowsiness.<\/strong>\u00a0 Melatonin responds to the circadian rhythm.\u00a0 This is the cycle of day and night that is created by the Earth\u2019s orbit around the Sun.\u00a0 Melatonin is preserved across most species and therefore is quite important to life on Earth.<\/p><p>Melatonin is released when your environment gets darker &#8211; such as when the sun goes down &#8211; as part of your body\u2019s natural sleep\/wake cycle.
