They reduce the production of molecules and enzymes that produce an inflammatory response. They act on eicosanoids, cytokines, and cyclooxygenase -2 (COX-2). Omega-3 has shown to be a safer alternative to NSAIDs which can have many serious side effects if used long-term. NSAIDs often simply block the enzyme that produces the proinflammatory products (COX enzymes).
